Apple released the first beta version of iOS 18.2 to developers this week. This provides additional Apple Intelligence features, including integration with ChatGPT, Image Playground, and Genmoji. However, for features related to image generation, beta users may have to wait several weeks before trying them out.
This deployment strategy is part of Apple’s commitment to responsible AI principles.
To use Genmoji and Image Playground, you have to join a long waiting list
In a note to developers, Apple emphasizes that it will roll out access to Image Playground, Genmoji, and Image Wand “in the coming weeks.” To access these features, users must join the waiting list. This is similar to how Apple rolled out the first set of Apple Intelligence tools in the iOS 18.1 beta.
However, given Apple Intelligence’s faster initial rollout, many developers thought there was something wrong with the iOS 18.2 beta. But once again, Apple has made it clear that users may have to wait several weeks on a waiting list.
“In the coming weeks, we will be rolling out access to Image Playground, Genmoji, and Image Wand. You will receive a notification when a feature is ready to test. Once you receive access, you will be able to access Image Playground, Genmoji, and Image Wand. “You can provide feedback by tapping the thumbs up or down for each result,” Apple explains.
Apple Intelligence works with both on-device and online language models. There’s also the fact that the language model used for image generation will be downloaded after the iOS 18.2 beta update. Perhaps Apple anticipated that many users would be interested in testing the new feature and chose a gradual rollout to avoid potential overload.
Developers can join the waitlist within any image creation experience in iOS 18.2, including the Image Playground app and the Emoji Keyboard. When you request access to one of these experiences, you’ll be placed on the waiting list for all three image generators: Genmoji, Image Wand, and Image Playground.
Additionally, Apple has repeatedly emphasized a set of responsible AI principles. As part of this, Apple is taking precautions to identify how its AI tools can be misused and lead to potential harm. This is in recognition of the fact that generative AI models, including those that power the image generation capabilities of iOS 18.2, can cause unexpected results.
Throughout the iOS 18.2 beta, Apple is asking testers for feedback on their experience. Apple will consider the feedback it receives to test the feature among beta users and ultimately decide when to roll it out more broadly to the general public.
“We take precautions at every stage of the process, including design, model training, feature development, and quality assessment, to identify how our AI tools can be misused or lead to potential harm. “We will use user feedback to continually and proactively improve our AI tools,” Apple promised when it first announced Apple Intelligence in June.
At this time, iOS 18.2 beta is only available on devices compatible with Apple Intelligence. That means iPhone 15 Pro or newer and M1 iPad or newer. Of course, this update will eventually be available on other devices as well. Apple has previously indicated that iOS 18.2 will be generally available in December.
iOS 18.1 will be released next week with Apple Intelligence Writing Tools and notifications and text summaries.
