Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced a major reorganization across Gemini, Assistant, and search.
Previously, the Gemini apps team was part of Google’s Knowledge and Information division, which included search, advertising, geography (maps), and commerce. They have now been transferred to the Google DeepMind organization, which was founded last year.
Pichai says, “Stronger team collaboration improves feedback loops, enables faster deployment of new models in the Gemini app, makes post-training more efficient, and improves product excellence.” We can build momentum.”
On the other hand, the Assistant team, which is not part of (close to) the Gemini team and is “focused on devices and home experiences, will move to the Platforms and Devices, or Pixel and Android division.” It means we can sit closer to the surface of the products we are building, unite our AI-powered home efforts as one team, and focus on improving the user experience.”
Additionally, Google’s head of search, Prabhakar Raghavan, will step down from his role as senior vice president and “return to his computer science roots and assume the role of chief engineer at Google.”

Prabhakar’s leadership journey at Google has been impressive across research, workspaces, advertising, and K&I. He led the Gmail team that launched Smart Reply and Smart Compose as early examples of using AI to improve products, and grew Gmail and Drive to 1 billion users. Across K&I, Prabhakar and the team have been involved in everything from the launch of AI Overview, a breakthrough advancement in search that will benefit hundreds of millions of users around the world, to Circle to Search, video understanding, and “What You See.” We have achieved significant growth and innovation, from introducing new search modalities such as ‘buy’. ” into Lens to improve core search functionality. Maps and shopping have been transformed with AI-driven features like immersive views and virtual try-ons. We’ve also made great strides in advertising with AI-powered ad formats and streamlined campaign management, and continue to innovate with P-MAX, empowering millions of businesses.
The Knowledge and Information division will be led by Nick Fox, a longtime Google employee. Mr. Fox served as an assistant when the company was founded and currently serves as SVP.
Over the past few years, Nick has been instrumental in shaping Google’s AI product roadmap and worked closely with Prabhakar and his leadership team on K&I strategy. Throughout his career, Nick has also held leadership positions in nearly every aspect of K&I, from search and assistant products and design to shopping, travel and payments products. He was also a pioneering leader in advertising, helping establish the rigorous quality and user-focused approach that are key to our success. Nick has launched innovative consumer products such as Google Fi and spearheaded complex initiatives such as RCS Messaging. I frequently rely on Nick to tackle my toughest product questions, and he consistently delivers progress with tenacity, speed, and optimism.
