If you had told us a few years ago that the iPad’s chip technology would eventually “trickle down” to the iMac, we wouldn’t have believed you, rather than the other way around. That’s your Apple in 2024.
This is a roundabout way of saying that the M4 chip that debuted in the iPad Pro earlier this year – you know, was supposed to render all instruments useless – has been replaced in the new iMac. It comes in 8-core and 10-core flavors (both CPU and GPU), with initial specs of 16 GB RAM and 256 GB storage (expandable up to 32 GB RAM and 2 TB storage).
Choose from 7 color options and 2 or 4 Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports. The 24-inch, 4.5K Retina display has a nanotextured glass option for those who want and can afford it.
Unsurprisingly, the new M4 iMac supports Apple Intelligence, a new suite of AI features available starting today. This includes writing tools, an enhanced Siri experience, smart image editing, and more.
What differentiates the iMac M4 from the latest iPad Pro is, of course, its operating system: macOS rather than iPadOS. As we all know, if you’re a musician, the former is much more flexible than the latter, allowing you to run full desktop DAWs and standard VST/AU plugins.
The M4 iMac is available for pre-order from today, with prices starting at $1,299/£1,299. For more information, please visit Apple’s website.
