FCC sets 2026 deadline for hearing aid compatibility on smartphones, requiring all companies to comply

The US government recently issued a new directive that will soon require all mobile phones in the region to be compatible with hearing aids. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced new mandates for smartphone manufacturers to ensure their devices are compatible with hearing aids by 2026. This move aims to improve accessibility for individuals with hearing loss.

The FCC has also set different transition schedules for wireless providers. National carriers have a 30-month grace period to comply, while smaller non-national providers have a 42-month grace period.

FCC obligations

In addition to hearing aid compatibility, the FCC now requires smartphones to offer simpler Bluetooth pairing options. The committee also warned manufacturers against using proprietary Bluetooth systems, which can complicate connectivity with hearing aids, and emphasized the need for universal compatibility.

Smartphone manufacturers are now required to meet certain volume regulatory standards and clearly indicate hearing aid compatibility on product packaging and websites. This new regulation aims to improve accessibility for users with hearing impairments.

The FCC mandate follows Apple’s recent announcement that AirPods Pro 2 will support hearing aid functionality. Apple has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to classify AirPods Pro 2 as an over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid.

Apple’s hearing aid features operate as a software-based mobile medical app and can be customized through iOS devices such as iPhones. This feature uses data from iOS HealthKit to tailor hearing aid features to your specific needs. Once configured, AirPods Pro can amplify sound for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss, providing a more accessible and affordable hearing solution.
