Google is working on official support for Debian Linux on Android devices via a new Terminal app.
Here’s what we know
This app, discovered by the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), uses the Android Virtualization Framework (AVF) to run a Debian virtual machine. This allows users to run Linux commands in an isolated environment on Android devices.
This feature opens new opportunities for developers. Developers can now code and test Android applications directly on their phones and tablets, positively impacting the entire Android ecosystem. The Terminal app will be integrated into Android settings, allowing you to load, configure, and run Debian virtual machines.
In the future, features such as disk resizing, port forwarding, partition recovery, etc. will be added. The app will be available on Chromebooks, tablets, and Android smartphones. The official release is likely to coincide with the release of Android 16 next year.
