Important points
- Starting today, OpenAI is introducing search functionality in ChatGPT for Plus and Team users, and other types of users will soon have access.
- A new search feature makes it easier for web users to find previous conversations and pick up where they left off.
- This is a small upgrade, but it helps bring the web client up to par with OpenAI’s mobile apps.
ChatGPT may be at the forefront of AI tools on the web, but despite its usefulness, it still lacks some key features. Thankfully, OpenAI is working to overcome these shortcomings. A new update makes it possible to search your ChatGPT history on the web, making it easier to find a specific thread and pick up where you left off, or double-check an answer you think is wrong.

Explore the magic of ChatGPT, where every chat can lead to an unexpected discovery
As shared on OpenAI on X (formerly Twitter), the ability to search ChatGPT history on the web is rolling out to Plus and Team users starting today, and Enterprise and Educational users will have access within the next week. . If you’re on ChatGPT’s free plan, you’ll have to wait until sometime in November.
The user replied to the post with a screenshot, confirming that for Plus users, this feature is already available in the form of a small magnifying glass in the top left of the screen. Similar functionality is already available on mobile, but for too long browser users have had to manually search for previously asked questions.
Is this feature similar to SearchGPT?
Back in July, OpenAI rolled out what it called a “temporary prototype” of a new service called SearchGPT. The tool essentially functions as a real-time search engine, similar to how competing model Perplexity works. The new search feature is different. Rather than searching the web, it searches for keywords across all your previous chats with the AI and returns results based on them. If you’re waiting for SearchGPT functionality to become more widespread, sorry. You’ll have to wait a little longer.
While it’s nice to see this feature added, users who posted on OpenAI’s post asked for more specific tools, such as the ability to separate chats into specific folders or pin conversations. Some people wondered why it took so long to implement a search feature that shouldn’t be that difficult. Still, the overwhelming majority of answers are positive, and with any luck, other requested features will soon be introduced to the chatbot.
