OpenAI has started testing a Windows app for ChatGPT. The initial version is available for download from the Microsoft Store, but access is limited to ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users, OpenAI said in an X post on Thursday.
This desktop app is compatible with Windows 10 (version 17763.0 and later) and Windows 11 and comes with OpenAI’s latest o1 language model. This model can reason, but it takes some time to answer the question. OpenAI views this delay as a sign of greater intelligence.
Like its macOS counterpart, ChatGPT for Windows allows you to interact with AI-powered chatbots in a companion window alongside your other apps. Use the Alt+Space shortcut to quickly launch apps. You can enter a query or upload files or documents to be analyzed. You can also generate images using DALL-E, which is included in the app.
One important feature missing from early versions of the Windows ChatGPT app is an advanced voice mode. This may be added to the full version of the app, which OpenAI plans to release to all users later this year.
ChatGPT Plus starts at $20 per month. If you don’t want to pay or download an app to use ChatGPT, you can always use the free, limited web version of the platform or Microsoft Copilot. Newer Windows PCs have a dedicated Copilot key on the keyboard to invoke AI, but you can customize the button to launch ChatGPT instead.

Microsoft’s paid version Copilot and Google’s paid version Gemini also cost $20 per month each. If you don’t want your questions rejected by chatbots, there’s also VeniceAI, a free, uncensored AI platform.
