The popular Blackmagic Camera app has received a major update with multiple new features for iOS users. The new version adds support for iPhone 16 camera controls, as well as additional bitrate options and many other improvements. Keep reading to learn more about the new features of Blackmagic Camera.
New features in Blackmagic Camera 2.1 for iPhone
Following the August release of Blackmagic Camera 2.0 with native support for iPad, the app has been updated to version 2.1. One of the most notable changes in today’s update is support for camera controls on iPhone 16 models. Users can control zoom, exposure, focus, ISO, and more by simply sliding their finger on the camera controls.
Additionally, you can now open apps using Control Center, Lock Screen, or Camera controls. Blackmagic Camera 2.1 also introduces support for DockKit-compatible iPhone accessories such as the Insta360 Flow Pro gimbal.
Another welcome change is the addition of a higher bitrate option for recording video using the H.264 and H.265 codecs. This means you can benefit from higher bitrates and logging without relying on the ProRes codec, which results in larger files.
Here is the complete list of changes coming with the update:
- Support for launching and recording using iPhone 16 camera controls.
- Ability to control zoom, exposure bias, focus, ISO, and other settings using iPhone 16 camera controls.
- Ability to launch apps from Control Center, lock screen, or camera control button.
- Support for logging into Blackmagic Cloud organizational accounts.
- Display timecode of time-lapse frequency and duration in an overlay while recording.
- Off-speed recordings now include audio.
- Improved overlay to indicate when off-speed mode is active.
- Option to limit HDMI monitoring to HD resolution.
- HDMI monitoring preview remains active on all pages.
- Bit rate options when recording to H.264 and H.265 codecs.
- Support for DockKit compatible iPhone accessories.
- Improved timecode accuracy for Tentacle sync devices.
- Improved performance when recording high-speed ProRes 4K clips on iPhone 16 Pro models.
- Improved remote monitoring performance when recording using a proxy.
- Switching to the front-facing camera when recording now captures in the correct orientation.
- Improved overall performance and stability.

For those unfamiliar, this app is developed by the same company that makes the popular video editing software DaVinci Resolve.
Blackmagic Camera is available for free from the App Store. Requires an iPhone XR or later running iOS 17 or later. Please note that some features (such as Log Color Profiles) are only available on certain iPhone models due to hardware limitations.
Of course, since this app was developed by Blackmagic, it integrates seamlessly with DaVinci Resolve and Blackmagic Cloud, so you can sync your videos directly with those apps.
