Half as Interesting’s Sam Denby takes an interesting look at the world of North Korean smartphones. All of these smartphones have their own app stores in their physical locations. That’s right, you need access to one of these app stores to install any kind of software.
Egypt-based telecommunications company Orascom Telecom Media and Technology Holding partnered with North Korea to establish a new 3G mobile phone service called Koryolink in 2008. Non-resident visitors who want a SIM card for their device must pay at least $285 USD. This also doesn’t include data and costs an additional $23 for just 50MB. One of the North Korean-specific smartphones is the Arirang 171, which was first introduced in 2018. This is the fifth Arirang model with a 5.5-inch screen, Mediatek MT6797 processor, 4GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, 13MP rear camera, 8MP front selfie camera and fingerprint sensor.
