Apple’s low-cost iPad and MacBook series are scheduled for an update in early 2025, and Mac Studio won’t receive an M4 upgrade until the summer, according to reports.
According to a report from bloombergApple is gearing up for a busy spring release cycle. The M4 MacBook Air is expected to begin production soon with a release window in early 2025.
That leaves Mac Studio and Mac Pro, which will probably be announced during the typical summer period from WWDC in June to mid-July. At that point, Apple will introduce the M4 Ultra for these high-end desktops.
The report states that Mac Studio is “delayed” as Apple originally planned to release it at the same time as the MacBook Air refresh. However, Apple’s reported desktop releases are said to be from March to June, which is in line with its normal schedule, so why did Apple release it earlier, and why is this considered a delay? It is not clear whether
busy spring
Spring is packed with products like the long-awaited iPhone SE 4 and the updated 11th generation iPad. The iPad Air lineup could also feature an M4 processor in a surprise year-over-year chipset update, but that seems unlikely.
After upgrading its tablet to M2 in 2023, Apple could surprise customers by launching the M4 iPad Air, but it’s the same chipset used in the iPad Pro. And since it’s highly unlikely that Apple will move on to the M3 in May, it seems odd that the iPad Air would be included in product launch rumors unless Apple dramatically changes its iPad strategy.
Apple may move the announcement to early 2024 to space things out, but the schedule for the M4 MacBook Air and desktop Macs fits in with Apple’s normal schedule. We rate this rumor as likely, but note that it’s still early and things could change by March.
