Next week’s announcement of the M4 MacBook Pro, M4 Mac mini, and M4 iMac are expected to be the last major products released in 2024. But it looks like Apple is starting 2025 with a bang.
Apple is preparing to begin producing the M4 MacBook Air for release in “early 2025,” according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Garman. How early? Gurman says Apple is planning a December software update (possibly macOS 15.2), and then plans to release the M4 MacBook Air between January and March next year. Garman said the new MacBook Air will simply update the chip from M3 to M4 in both the 13-inch and 15-inch models, codenamed J713 and J715. The release of the M4 MacBook Air comes about a year after the release of the M3 MacBook in March of this year.
Gurman also reports that the new Mac Studio used to have a similar schedule to the M4 MacBook Air, but Apple has decided to push the release back to March or June. The current Mac Studio, released in June 2023, has an M2 Max or M2 Ultra chip. As Apple is phasing out the M3 series, it is believed that the new Mac Studio will be equipped with M4 Max and M4 Ultra chips. Due to the schedule change, Mac Studio will update every two years.
Gurman said the M4 Mac Pro is still in development, but there has been no update on a release schedule. Gurman previously reported that the M4 Mac Pro could be released as early as late 2025, or at WWDC in June.
But the first half of 2025 isn’t just about Macs. Gurman reports that in addition to the 11th generation iPad, Apple plans to release an “improved iPhone SE, new iPad Air models, and an upgraded iPad keyboard” for the “spring product release cycle.” . As rumored, the iPhone SE will be a complete redesign of the budget phone with an iPhone 14-style design, support for Apple Intelligence, and the first Apple-designed modem. Updates for the 11th generation iPad and iPad Air will likely involve minor changes.
