Worried about what would happen to iPhone production and shipments if the United States and China were to enter another trade war, Apple has gradually expanded production of its most important devices to other countries such as India and Vietnam. Going back to 2018, President Trump has threatened to impose tariffs of 10% or 25% on Chinese-made cell phones, including iPhones. To understand why Apple may want to move production out of China, so they need to properly explain what tariffs are.

What exactly is a price list?

Customs duty is an import tax, nothing more, nothing less. Customs duties imposed on products imported from China are not paid by the Chinese. Do you want to know who pays the tariffs on Chinese imports to the United States? American companies do, and if these companies want to recover this amount, they will increase the price of their products. So, contrary to what you’ve heard, the bottom line is that if the United States imposes tariffs on products from, say, China, American businesses and consumers pay for it.

This does not mean that China’s economy will not be affected, as demand for products targeted by tariffs is expected to decline due to higher prices. However, since the iPhone is a US company, the only negative impact iPhone tariffs would have on China would be job losses if Apple decides to reduce production of the device in the country.

Tariffs on iPhone models imported from China are bad for Apple and US iPhone buyers. Apple will be forced to pay tariffs, but Tim Cook will decide whether to spend the import tax or raise the price of iPhones and pass it on to consumers. Amid the US-China trade war, some Apple accessories such as adapters, chargers, cables and cords A 10% import tax was imposed. Apple never passed on the higher prices to consumers, so consumers never knew.

What Apple learned from this period was that it needed to find an alternative location to manufacture iPhones outside of China. India is one such country. There are factories in the country that can assemble iPhones, the supply chain is within reach, and Apple has been producing iPhone models in India since 2017. Furthermore, the availability of cheap and abundant labor also enriches India. It has the potential to replace China.

In the six months to September 2024, iPhone exports from India rose 33% year-on-year to nearly $6 billion. of The source who provided this information to Bloomberg asked to remain anonymous because the data is private. At this pace, iPhone exports from India will exceed $10 billion in 2024.

The first iPhone made in India was the 2017 “low-cost” iPhone SE

Besides Foxconn, which accounts for half of the iPhone units manufactured and shipped in India, Pegatron and Tata Electronics also assemble iPhone models in southern India. Smartphones have become India’s largest export to the US, with $2.88 billion worth of smartphones delivered from India to the US in the first five months of this year. Five years ago, before Apple ramped up iPhone production in India, total smartphone exports to the US were much lower at $5.2 million.

Apple uses its ‘budget’ to start iPhone production in India iPhone SE models; this was done to take advantage of the fact that products manufactured in India are not subject to the $100 import tax. Although the country is the world’s second-largest smartphone market after China, it is a developing market and not everyone can afford an iPhone. So Apple iPhone SE In India, the company plans to offer iPhone models that can compete on price with the country’s top brands, including Xiaomi, a company with high cost performance.

Eventually, Apple may one day produce more iPhones in India than in China for export. But that day is still far in the future.
