Apple’s interest in gaming continues to grow. 9to5 mac The company claimed Tuesday that it is working on “an App Store-like app specifically for games.”
According to a reliable source familiar with Apple’s plans, 9to5 mac We’re reporting that Apple is developing an app that effectively combines the features of the App Store and Game Center, but with a focus on mobile gaming. The new app does not replace Apple’s Game Center service, but instead integrates users’ Game Center profiles.
Sources say the unnamed app will have multiple tabs, similar to the App Store. One is the Play Now tab, which shows the user’s games, friends, and more. You’ll also see Apple editorial content, suggestions for the next game to download, challenges, leaderboards, and achievements.
The app includes games from the App Store and Apple Arcade, Apple’s subscription service. We also highlight special events in the game and provide information about game updates. Apple is experimenting with FaceTime and iMessage integration to facilitate interaction during gaming sessions. Additionally, Apple is considering allowing mobile developers to create mini-games using App Clips, which do not require a download.
Personally, as someone who spends hours playing games on my iPhone every week, I think this is a step in the right direction. The App Store is so convoluted that it’s getting harder and harder to find apps every year. A clean slate and starting over with a completely new app should be a win-win for gamers and game developers alike.
Officials could not provide details about the app’s expected release date. It could come in an iOS 18 update, but it could also come as part of iOS 19.
