Apple today announced the release of Apple Intelligence, a new AI-powered personal intelligence system available through a free software update for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This update includes iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 to help users refine their writing, organize notifications, interact with Siri more naturally, and use new cleanup tools. Introducing advanced features to help you remove unwanted objects from images and more. More features will be rolled out over the coming months.
“Apple Intelligence brings a new era to iPhone, iPad and Mac, delivering entirely new experiences and tools that transform what users can accomplish,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “Apple Intelligence builds on years of innovation in AI and machine learning, putting Apple’s generative models at the core of our devices to give users an easy-to-use personal intelligence system while protecting their privacy. Apple Intelligence is generative AI in a way that only Apple can deliver, and we’re excited about its ability to enrich the lives of our users.”
Enhanced burning tools across devices
Apple Intelligence introduces system-wide writing tools that allow users to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Features include Rewrite, which allows users to adjust the tone with options such as professional, concise, and friendly. Proofread provides grammar and sentence structure suggestions with explanations, and Summarize provides text in paragraph, bulleted, table, or list format.
A more natural and conversational Siri
With Apple Intelligence, Siri has been significantly upgraded to be more natural and conversational. Users can type into Siri at any time on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac and fluidly switch between text and voice. Siri can now maintain context across multiple requests, answer thousands of questions about Apple product features, and provide guidance on settings and features.
Advanced photo features
The Photos app now supports natural language search, allowing users to search for images and videos by describing the content, such as “Maya skateboarding in a tie-dyed shirt.” Additionally, new cleanup tools allow users to remove unnecessary objects from images to improve visual quality while maintaining authenticity. Memories now lets you create custom movies based on your description and select and arrange photos and videos to create a storyline.
Centralized notifications and enhanced email management
Apple Intelligence introduces Priority Messages in Email to help users focus on the emails that matter most by highlighting urgent items like same-day invitations and boarding passes. The Summarize feature summarizes long threads, and Smart Reply quickly responds to emails. A new notification summary feature on the lock screen highlights important details in long notification threads.
More features coming soon
Additional Apple Intelligence features will be added in December, including improved writing tools that let you convert text into different styles and formats. A new visual intelligence experience provides object and location recognition with camera controls, allowing users to instantly learn about nearby locations and items. Apple Intelligence also introduces Genmoji and Image Playground, allowing users to create custom emojis and playful images with simple text descriptions.
Privacy-first approach
Apple Intelligence uses on-device processing for many features to prioritize user privacy. If you need additional processing power, private cloud computing ensures that Apple silicon server code is regularly inspected by independent experts to ensure compliance with privacy standards and that user data is safe and inaccessible to Apple. I will do so. Users also have access to Apple Intelligence’s ChatGPT feature with built-in privacy protection.
Initial Apple Intelligence features are now available as free updates on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Language support expands in December to cover localized English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. Additional language support will follow in April 2025.
Apple Intelligence is available on iPhone 16 series, iPhone 15 Pro models, iPad with A17 Pro or M1 or later, and Mac with M1 or later.
