People in the European Union finally know when Apple Intelligence will be available on mobile devices. Apple told EU users on Monday that its AI suite will be available in April 2025. The first Apple Intelligence features, including writing tools and AI notification summaries, are now available to English speakers in other regions.
Apple announced the EU launch date in a press release for the European Union (via 9to5 mac). “In April, Apple Intelligence features will begin rolling out to iPhone and iPad users in the EU,” the news post, translated from Italian, says.
The article states that the first wave of Apple Intelligence is already available for EU users in macOS Sequoia 15.1. This is because Apple used the Digital Markets Act (DMA) as the basis for the EU AI postponement. In this case, the regulation only affects iPhone and iPad software, not macOS.
Apple also confirmed Monday that its AI suite will be available in more languages through software updates starting in April and throughout the year. These include Chinese, Korean, French, Japanese, English (India), English (Singapore), Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, German, and Vietnamese. In December, Apple Intelligence will be available in English for Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.
Apple Intelligence will be rolled out in stages. Today’s first batch of iOS 18.1 (outside the EU) includes writing tools, live transcription, notification summaries, and more. iOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2 offer additional features such as ChatGPT integration, Genmoji, Visual Intelligence, and Image Playground. The software is currently in beta and is expected to be officially released in December.
The only catch is that you need a compatible device. For iPhone, this is limited to iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 series. M-series iPads, Macs, and the new 7th generation iPad mini are also supported.
Updated October 28, 2024, 4:09 PM ET: This article has been updated to correct the release timing of Apple Intelligence in more languages, clarifying that it will be released “in April and throughout the year” instead of just “in April.”
