Apple today announced that Tap to Pay for iPhone is now available in Austria, Czech Republic, Ireland, Romania, and Sweden, allowing independent sellers, small businesses, and large merchants in these countries to use their iPhones for contactless payments. They announced that they will provide a way to use it as a terminal.
Tap to Pay was first introduced in the U.S. in February 2022, allowing iPhones to accept payments through Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets. All transactions are encrypted and Apple has no information about your purchases or who made them.
No additional hardware or credit card machine is required to use Tap to Pay on iPhone. The feature uses NFC technology to securely authenticate contactless payments and also supports PIN entry, including accessibility options.
Starting today, Adyen, SumUp, and Viva.com will be the first payment platforms to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone in all five countries. Erste Bank’s Global Payments is available in Austria, Czech Republic and Romania. Stripe is available in Austria, Czech Republic, Ireland, and Sweden. Nexi is available in Austria and Sweden. Revolut is available in Austria and Ireland. myPOS and PAYONE are available in Austria. Zettle by PayPal is also available in Sweden. Austria’s hobex, Ireland’s BOI Payment AcceptanceGlobal Payments and Square, and Sweden’s Surfboard Payments plan to enable Tap to Pay on iPhone for their customers in the coming weeks. Tap to Pay on iPhone works with contactless credit and debit cards from major payment networks, including American Express, Discover, Mastercard, and Visa.
Tap to Pay on iPhone requires an iPhone XS or newer model and works just like regular Apple Pay transactions. Sellers simply open the app, register a sale, present the buyer’s iPhone, and the buyer can then use the appropriate contactless payment method.
It is currently available in 17 countries including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Austria, Czech Republic, Ireland, Romania, Netherlands, Sweden, Brazil, Italy, France, Taiwan, Ukraine, and Germany.
