Apple employees believe the company is two years behind the race in AI development as it relies on ChatGPT to close knowledge gaps

Apple showed off its AI capabilities at its WWDC event in June this year. While the features are very attractive, the company still has a lot of work to do to compete with industry giants, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform. The company is the latest to venture into the world of AI, as Google and Samsung have already begun efforts to integrate the technology into their devices. A prominent analyst now claims that Apple is two years behind in AI development and says it has a strategy to bring the technology to all of its devices over the next two years.

Apple is two years behind the industry in AI development, but will eventually catch up and bring Apple Intelligence to every device.

Apple has already announced its AI efforts, but has not yet made them publicly available. Apple appears to be testing the introduction of Apple Intelligence features in next week’s release of iOS 18.1, but the update won’t include everything the company showed off at WWDC. Instead, the company plans to split the feature into various updates and release them in their entirety until next year. We recently covered that Apple is already working on integrating ChatGPT with Siri, which is expected to be generally available later this year.

As Bloomberg’s Mark Garman argues in a recent article: power on newsletter Some Apple employees say they believe the company is two years behind its competitors when it comes to AI development. This period makes sense because Apple entered the category later than most of its competitors, including Google, Microsoft, and other major companies. It’s worth noting that the company is catching up with technology at a steady pace, and Apple Intelligence could be another goal the company can achieve.

Garman said Apple will eventually catch up to industry standards, even if it has to outsource the development process or integrate third-party language models. That said, Garman says that over the next two years, all Apple devices with screens will be running Apple Intelligence. Apple recently announced the iPad mini 7 with all the hardware requirements for Apple Intelligence, including 8GB of RAM and the A17 Pro chip. The entry-level iPad could be upgraded with the same AI features next year.

Additionally, we recently covered that Apple plans to introduce a new iPhone 17 ‘Air’ model next year with 8GB of RAM for Apple Intelligence. iPhone SE 4 is scheduled to be released in spring 2025 and will be the cheapest iPhone equipped with Apple Intelligence. The company seems to be fully committed to the field of AI and plans to integrate this technology into all its devices. Do you think Apple can close the two-year gap in AI advancements?
