Apple’s AI features are finally released, but are your devices powerful enough to access them?
Apple Intelligence, Apple’s suite of AI capabilities, began rolling out in the iOS 18.1 software update on Monday. This upgrade integrates artificial intelligence across the device with features like AI writing tools, summaries and smart replies, an updated Photos app, and smarter Siri.
However, many Apple products do not have access to this. The new software is officially available for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, and users will be able to access parts of the intelligence system starting Monday in U.S. English, but only certain iPhones can support AI, for example.
Even if you don’t have a brand new Apple device, you may still be able to take advantage of Apple Intelligence. Here’s a breakdown of the devices that can access Apple’s new products:
All iPhone 16, select iPhone 15 models
Apple says on its website that Apple Intelligence is available in beta on all iPhone 16 models: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. You can also access Apple Intelligence features on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
iPhone owners who upgrade to iOS 18.1 can enable AI by joining the waitlist in the Settings app.
Users with iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15, or earlier versions cannot access Apple Intelligence features.
iPad with M series or A17 Pro chip
According to Apple’s website, iPads with M-series chips or A17 Pro will also have access to some of the initial features. These are the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad Mini.
If you have a standard iPad, you won’t have access to Apple Intelligence features. It’s also not supported on versions earlier than the 5th generation iPad Pro or iPad Air. iPad Mini models other than those with the A17 Pro chip also do not support Apple Intelligence.
Mac with M1 chip or later
Macs with M1 chips or later can access Apple Intelligence features with the macOS Sequoia 15.1 update. This includes MacBook Air and MacBook Pro versions, as well as desktop iMac and Mac Mini versions. Apple’s display computers, such as Mac Studio with M1 Max or later and Mac Pro with M2 Ultra chip, will have access to the new features.
