Apple’s most affordable iPad in Europe has shipped with a USB-C charger since its launch in 2022, but Tuesday’s announcement of the new iPad mini will bring a USB-C charger to the lineup. It will probably remain the only device that does. The latest iPad Pro and iPad Air models released earlier this year do not include a charger in the box if purchased in Europe. All of these devices include only a USB-C cable.
While this change brings parity to Apple’s iPad lineup and is likely in response to upcoming EU regulations on e-waste, Apple also announced that it will remove chargers from iPad and iPad mini boxes in the UK, which is not part of the EU. was removed. However, the UK government has just started a consultation to consider the possibility of mandating USB-C as the standard charging port for electronic devices, so it’s hard to imagine that wouldn’t significantly reflect EU law.
Alongside this change, Apple has quietly lowered the price of the iPad in many European countries to 409 euros, a 30 euro reduction from the original price of 439 euros. Meanwhile, in the UK, Apple’s cheapest iPad has been cut in price by £20, from £349 to £329. The price of the entry-level iPad in the US remains unchanged, but US customers will still receive a 20W USB-C charger as part of the package.
