Starting later this month, Prime Video subscribers will be able to subscribe to Apple TV+ through Amazon. Specific details regarding the business agreement between Apple and Amazon are unclear. But Apple probably thinks it can attract more subscribers by offering TV+ as an add-on subscription for Prime Video subscribers.
This quote from Eddy Cue provided in Amazon’s press release says:
“We want to bring Apple TV+ and its award-winning library of series and movies from the world’s best storytellers to as many viewers as possible,” said Eddie Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services. states. “We’re thrilled that Prime Video is bringing Apple TV+ to our viewers to give them an incredibly wide range of viewing options.”
Meanwhile, Amazon suggests that “one convenient app, one billing relationship” will encourage Prime members to subscribe to Apple TV+ in this new way. Apple similarly sells video subscriptions to competing services through the Apple TV app’s Channels feature. Prime Video isn’t one of those services yet.
Why subscribe through Amazon?
What’s interesting about this partnership is that Apple hasn’t yet expanded distribution of Apple TV+. Apple TV+ service is generally available wherever Amazon Prime Video service is available. However, it may help potential Apple TV+ subscribers overcome the hurdle of understanding how to subscribe to Apple TV+ service through Apple.
A common misconception about the Apple TV+ service is that you need an Apple TV hardware set-top box to access the streaming video service on your TV. In fact, Apple TV+ is available on virtually all smart TVs, set-top boxes, sticks, game consoles, and on the web through the Apple TV app.
Subscribe to Apple TV+ via Amazon Prime Video would do Deliver the right app experience on Android. However, if improving the TV+ experience on Android is Apple’s goal, bringing the Apple TV app to Android would give Apple more control over the user experience.
Apple TV+ through Prime Video costs the same $9.99 per month as Apple TV+ directly from Apple. Prime Video is a separate subscription that ranges from $8.99 to $17.98 per month.
