Android prepares continuous notifications and behaves like a Dynamic Island

android 12 beta 4

Apple’s Dynamic Island is underutilized, but its integration with Live Activities on iOS is what makes it so great, and Google has made it similar to Android in a very obvious way in hindsight. It looks like you are preparing to add things to “Rich Continuous Notifications”.

Dynamic islands are a clever way to hide the camera cutout on Apple’s latest iPhones, but they can also make it easier to track live activity from apps. Live activities can serve a variety of needs, but are most useful for tracking ongoing processes, such as rideshare wait times, navigation, and food delivery tracking.

Android apps can share the same information through traditional notifications, but the functionality available on iPhone is definitely more convenient when it comes to having information at your fingertips.

Now, Google seems to have found a solution.

as discovered by Android permissions In the latest Android 15 QPR1 beta, Google is working on a new “Rich Oncoming Notices” API that will allow apps to display information about their activities in a more efficient way. It was inevitable that Android would offer a feature like this, but the “how” was unclear for a while.

This new API allows apps to go beyond just icons and create notifications that leverage status chips, which Android has supported for some time. These chips are currently used for features like continuous calling, and will also be used for casting and screen recording when the first QPR1 release of Android 15 reaches stable later this year.

In hindsight, this makes perfect sense.

A mockup of the functionality in action using the API shows what it will look like in the end. Since this is a system-level feature and it takes time for developers to update their apps to support it, Google may release this feature in Android 16, but work has been found in QPR1. Given that, technically it could have been released sooner. However, in either case, this is a potentially exciting new feature addition.

Notably, Samsung also appears to be taking advantage of features like One UI 7, the company’s much-delayed Android 15 update.
