Amazon has announced a new Fire HD 8 tablet with great specs and cameras at an incredibly low starting price (assuming you buy it now).
The new Fire HD 8 tablet comes in two models with 32GB of storage and 3GB of RAM in black, hibiscus (pink) or emerald, priced at $99.99 / £99.99 with lock screen ad , $114.99 / £109.99 without lock screen ads. If you need more storage, you can get 64GB and 4GB of RAM in black for $129.99 / £124.99 with ads or $144.99 / £134.99 without ads.
Both models can expand storage with an SD card, boast a 13-hour battery, and feature a new 5MP rear camera for snapshots.
There are also two new kids versions that come with a protective case, no ads, 6 months of Amazon Kids Plus, and a 2-year warranty. The new Fire HD 8 Kids costs $139.99 / £149.99 and the Fire HD 8 Kids Pro costs $139.99 / £149.99. Both also have a long battery life of 13 hours and a 5MP rear camera.
Beyond the new hardware, there are new AI features on these tablets and Amazon’s other Fire tablets, including a writing assistant and a custom wallpaper creator.

The only area that doesn’t seem to have been upgraded is probably the Fire HD 8’s weakest feature, at least based on our 3-star Fire HD 8 (2022) review, and that’s the display.
It’s technically 1280 x 800 “HD”, but it’s not the full HD (1080p) we want. This means that playing games or watching shows on your tablet is an okay experience, but using your tablet for reading isn’t ideal.

If display issues are holding you back from buying a new Amazon tablet, you’d better act soon. If you’re someone who usually likes to wait for Amazon Prime Day (Amazon Big Deal Day, which runs from October 8th to October 9th) to get discounts, you don’t have to this time. Because from now through October 9th, all new Fire HD 8 tablets are up to 50% off.
The cheapest model starts at $54.99 / £49.99, which isn’t bad for a new tablet.
Make sure you are purchasing the “New Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablet” released in 2024. Amazon in the US and UK still has sales listings for the 2022 version, but (at least as of this writing) the 2022 model isn’t very useful. The page still says “Showing the latest model for this product.” I almost got caught while writing this article, so if you are actually thinking of purchasing a new tablet, please be careful not to get caught.
