Amazon updated its Fire HD 8 lineup last week with immediate discounts for October’s Prime Day sale. The new slab has more RAM, better camera settings, built-in AI features, and is different from the previous slab. Prices for this device typically start at $100 (with lock screen ads), but Amazon is currently selling the base model for $55 until October 9th. Upgraded configurations with more memory and storage are also available for MSRP $130 to $85.
As the name suggests, the new Fire HD 8 features an 8-inch display with 1280 x 800 resolution (189 ppi). One of the big upgrades for the 2024 model is the inclusion of 3GB of RAM in the base storage tier (32GB). The 64GB version, on the other hand, slides up to 4GB of RAM. Of course, this is a very low-cost tablet, so these are far from boundary-breaking numbers. But it’s still 50-100% more expensive than the 2022 model’s 2GB RAM.

Amazon rates the Fire HD 8’s battery life at up to 13 hours. The tablet’s rear camera is 5MP. (This is the same as the “Plus” version in 2022 and earlier versions, but higher than the 2MP in the old standard version.)
The tablet also includes some generative AI features. Similar to Apple’s earlier efforts at AI in its 2024 update, these include a writing assist feature that can write out messages based on prompts. It can also summarize web pages, provide grammar suggestions, and adjust brevity.
The tablet also comes in two children’s versions: Fire HD 8 Kids and Fire HD 8 Kids Pro. As you would expect from Amazon’s children’s versions, these versions include “kid’s” cases with Disney-branded designs (including Pixar Cars, Disney Princesses, or Marvel’s Avengers). It also comes with a subscription to Amazon Kids+, the company’s content distribution service for kids (including mobile games!). Of the two, the Kids version has a thicker case made for younger kids, while the Kids Pro has a slimmer hard case designed for older kids. Both kids tablets normally cost $140, but are currently marked down to $70 for Prime Day.
