While the information in this article is still useful, both Cydia and jailbreak face an uncertain future. Cydia’s app sales feature was disabled in December 2018. Jailbreaking has declined as Apple has made iOS more powerful and flexible, and security holes have been patched (making it harder to jailbreak). If app sales stop and momentum slows, Cydia could cease operations altogether.
Cydia is an alternative App Store that provides apps for iPhone, iPod touch, and some versions of iPad that are not available in Apple’s official App Store. Apps available on Cydia may have been rejected by Apple for reasons such as violating Apple’s App Terms or competing with Apple’s own apps. Some apps available on Cydia may also allow you to do things that Apple doesn’t want you to do.
What do I need to use Cydia?
A jailbroken iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 3 or later.
Where can I download Cydia?
Many jailbreaks for iOS give you the option to install Cydia as part of the process. If not, you can download the latest version of Cydia from here.
What types of apps does Cydia have?
There are a wide variety of apps available on Cydia. Some apps perform system-level tasks that Apple blocks from apps approved in the official App Store. Some apps are for testing purposes only. Some developers prefer Cydia over the App Store as a general rule. They don’t want Apple to take 30% of their revenue from paid apps and subscriptions.
How much does the Cydia app cost?
Similar to the official App Store, Cydia’s apps are both free and paid. Paid apps range in price from USD 0.99 to over USD 20.
Remember: Cydia’s app sales feature is disabled, at least for the time being.
Can I pay for Cydia apps with my Apple ID/Apple Account?
no. Apple accounts only work when you buy things from Apple (like the App Store or iTunes). To purchase apps through Cydia, you can use PayPal, Amazon Payments, or in some cases a credit card.
Are Cydia apps safe?
One of the ways Apple promotes the App Store is by emphasizing reviewing apps for bad coding or malicious behavior. It is designed to protect users and promote quality software. Cydia does not provide this type of detailed inspection of apps before they are made available to users.
Apple’s approval process, on the other hand, restricts apps that may be perfectly safe but are somehow against Apple’s interests. On the other hand, a certain level of quality is guaranteed.
Cydia is not supported by Apple and its apps are not checked before posting, so install apps from Cydia at your own risk. This risk may include the possibility that some apps may contain malware or spyware, or that Apple may not provide support as a result of issues caused by Cydia apps, even under warranty. There is a gender. Apple has not previously specifically supported jailbroken devices because jailbreaking voids the device’s warranty.
Does Cydia work the same way as the App Store?
In many ways, yes. But in one important respect this is not the case. Apple’s App Store stores all the apps it sells on Apple’s servers and downloads them from there. However, Cydia is more like a directory or intermediary than a store. When you download an app from Cydia, the download happens directly from the app’s creator and not from Cydia servers. This also means that re-downloading an app from Cydia can be a problem if the app’s creator no longer offers it.
