One of the best trends in mobile devices these days is the push for anti-reflective displays, and the company that does this best is TCL. I recently had the chance to try out the TCL Tab 10 NXTPAPER 5G, and the biggest highlight for me was the display, which I want on all my tablets from now on.

The TCL Tab 10 NXTPAPER 5G is, by many accounts, a relatively unremarkable Android tablet. It’s a little underpowered, in the affordable price range, and doesn’t have much in terms of accessory ecosystem. But for just $240, there’s still a lot to love here.
For me, it was mainly the display.
The 10.4-inch, 2000 x 1200 LCD display isn’t particularly impressive on its own. Although LCDs are inherently not as easy to use as OLEDs, the colors are great and the panel was bright enough for my travels, as I mostly used the tablet for movies and reading. The viewing angles left a lot of room for improvement, but the biggest drawback was the matte finish.
The matte finish on TCL’s glass display is just out of this world compared to what you’ll find elsewhere, both in terms of look and feel. The matte texture absorbs all the reflections found in airports and other locations that rely on overhead lighting. There are no distractions and you don’t have to play around with angles to find the right way to watch without disturbing the lighting, making it a fun way to watch movies.
This is only improved by TCL’s NXTPAPER mode, which can turn the display into a color or monochrome experience similar to what you get with e-ink. This is very effective at blocking out distractions while trying to read content and is easy on the eyes. Compared to regular tablets, I felt less fatigue when using this tablet than others.
Just like the last time we tried this matte finish, the 10.4-inch size is also a big highlight. Since it was a huge 14-inch model, I wanted a smaller model.
I really wish basically every tablet had some version of this matte display. It takes away the pain of applying screen protectors and provides a great experience right out of the box, especially as matte glass screen protectors are disappearing.
The TCL Tab 10 NXTPAPER 5G itself is a good enough showcase for this display, but we wish we could have seen it with something a little more powerful. The underpowered MediaTek chip and 6GB of RAM left a lot to be desired in terms of performance. This is acceptable, but can be a bit slow, especially for games.
Another great thing about my time with the Tab 10 was the 5G connectivity. I usually prefer just launching hotspots from my phone, but the Tab 10’s dedicated connectivity makes it very easy to start streaming a movie or access a website without fiddling with your phone. Now it’s easier. This is a nice bonus, but I really wish TCL would sell this tablet as a Wi-Fi only model.
