Important points
- After the recent Android 15 update, Pixel 8 Pro users are experiencing back gesture issues.
- Tempered glass screen protectors and which side of the display you initiate the back gesture from can have an impact.
- A workaround I found was to turn gestures off, restart, and turn them back on.
Most Pixel fans have been waiting with bated breath for the release of Android 15 for the past few weeks. Android 15 is chock-full of features right now, but like any new software, some bugs are sure to slip through the beta.
some pixel 8 pro Users have been reporting issues with their phone’s “back” gesture since the update, saying it’s difficult to swipe from the edge of the display to go to the previous screen. Some people only have the problem on the right side, while others report that gesture controls are broken on both sides of the device. However, good news. Someone has come up with a workaround.

Get the most out of your Android 15 device
This issue was first spotted in a post on the Google Pixel subreddit. There, one user asked if anyone else was experiencing this issue, and received numerous replies from Pixel 8 Pro users expressing the same complaint (via Android Authority).
The issue appears to be caused by the Android 15 update. Probably related to the new predictive back gesture. The common thread across the reports is that this issue did not appear until after the update (some users experienced this issue in the early beta versions). This issue appears to be limited to Pixel 8 Pro users. Phones running Pixel 7 and Pixel 9 phones do not have the same issue.
After discovering this thread, I noticed the same behavior was occurring on my Pixel 8 Pro, but according to Android Authority, both Pixel 8 Pros are unaffected. Dozens more users responded to the Google Tracker thread reporting similar experiences.
Don’t erase your data or roll back to Android 14 yet. There is a simple workaround.
The good news is that there appears to be a fix. Credit for this goes to another Reddit user who discovered the same issue on the Android 15 beta subreddit. The solution is simple. Turn three-button navigation off and then back on.
- enter Settings → System → Navigation mode.
- Tap. 3 button navigation Radio button to disable gesture navigation.
- restart your phone.
- go to Settings → System → Navigation mode Also.
- Tap. gesture navigation Radio button to re-enable the gesture.
Perhaps this is just a small bug and will be updated with a hotfix soon, but until that happens, these steps should restore most of the functionality of the gesture controls.
