No niche smartphone manufacturer has achieved cult status thanks to its unusual style and attractive features. While last year’s Nothing Phone 2 further enhanced its unique look, this year’s Nothing Phone 2A and 2A Plus aim to deliver high-performance phones at an affordable price. Introducing a new glow-in-the-dark version of the Nothing Phone 2A Plus, built in partnership with the company’s relatively small but passionate community.
The Nothing Phone 2A Plus Community Edition features a customized glow-in-the-dark design and unique packaging, and was designed in accordance with Nothing’s Community Edition project competition. The company asked fans to create their own imaginative smartphones, including their opinions on how the smartphones would look, how they would be marketed, and even some of the hardware.
The design of the Nothing Phone 2A Plus Community Edition was created by Astrid Vanhuyse and Kenta Akasaki in collaboration with members of the Nothing team. The core of smartphones hasn’t changed much. There’s still the glyph-inspired aesthetic and light bar around the rear camera module, which acts as a camera flash and notification indicator. However, the material is different as the special edition phone has green luminescent material that glows in the dark. Like the glow-in-the-dark stars that many children stick to walls and ceilings, the glowing effect only requires “charging” with light and requires no electricity.
Cell phone packaging also glows in the dark, making it more like a work of art than something people will quickly throw away. The device also ships with new wallpapers to match the glowing green design.
Nothing Phone 2A Plus is more than just a pretty face. The device features a 6.7-inch OLED screen, a large 5,000mAh battery, and a MediaTek Dimensity 7350 Pro 5G processor co-designed by Nothing and MediaTek.
When it comes to the phone’s photo chops, the Android 14-powered device comes with dual rear cameras. The main camera combines a 24mm equivalent f/1.9 lens and a 50 megapixel image sensor (type 1/1.57). The phone also has a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. This ultrawide module offers a 114-degree field of view, a maximum aperture of f/2.2, and uses a type 1/2.76 image sensor. The front camera uses the same image sensor but has a narrower field of view. All three cameras record 4K HDR video at up to 30p.
Price and availability
The Nothing Phone 2A Plus is completely different from mass-market smartphone packs due to its price. This budget-friendly device costs just $399 without sacrificing much in features or performance.
However, unlike the standard version, the Nothing Phone 2A Plus Community Edition is very limited in quantity, with only 1,000 units being sold on November 12th. Interested buyers can learn more on the company’s website.
