If you’re a game developer or work on animation, you’ll be happy to know that there’s now a great new app available that will take a lot of the work out of motion capture. This app is called MobilePoser. Let’s see what it has to offer.

MobilePoser allows you to perform motion capture on your smartphone without the need for expensive equipment. This is a big hurdle for independent studios with limited budgets.

Unlike traditional motion capture systems, which require suits covered in sensors and high-tech cameras, MobilePoser uses accelerometers already installed in the devices we commonly use, such as smartphones, smartwatches, and earbuds. , gyroscope, and magnetometer.

Smartphone accelerometers and other devices can track our location in 3D space. These aren’t accurate enough to be used for motion capture on their own, but the team behind MobilePoser has figured out how to use AI to bridge the gap. The algorithm refines the data captured by the IMU and compares it with high-quality motion data to estimate joint positions, rotations, and even walking speeds. Additionally, a physically-based optimizer takes into account constraints such as joint flexibility to make movements look realistic.

Users can achieve even greater accuracy by wearing multiple devices. For example, if a user keeps their smartphone in their pocket while wearing a smartwatch, Stem can use various devices to retrieve the information it needs.

Developers have open sourced the model and encouraged collaboration to extend the capabilities of the technology, which will soon be available on iOS and watchOS platforms.
