In Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman’s latest newsletter, Power On, we learned that Apple’s development of the M5 chip will begin in 2023 in parallel with the A19 Pro. Garman predicts that Apple will announce the next generation of M5 silicon by the end of 2025, and a new iPad Pro could also be announced at the same time.
Garman explained: ”As for when the next iPad Pro will arrive, the company has historically updated its devices roughly every 18 months. Given that the M5 chip is expected to arrive around the end of next year, it seems likely that the next iPad Pro won’t debut until late 2025 or early 2026. I think there are other big changes as well. The current design is only half a year old.”.
Apple is reportedly one of the first customers for TSMC’s new 2nm process node, featuring the A17 Pro chip for the iPhone 19 and TSMC’s advanced SoIC packaging (SoIC = Small Outline Integrated Circuit) The company is manufacturing a new M5 chip. The new SoIC’s advanced packaging enables 3D stacking of chips, which improves thermal management, reduces leakage current, and improves electrical performance compared to 2D chip designs.
