Apple has announced the new iMac. It’s powered by the company’s fastest chip ever, and it looks a little different with updated colors. Oh, and what accessories have you been connecting with Lightning? It’s now a USB-C connector. Despite all the upgrades, prices haven’t gone up. This is all that was announced.
The latest iMac update came last October with the introduction of the M3 processor, marking a significant update from the previous iMac with the M1 chip. As you know, the M-series chips were Apple’s proprietary silicon that delivered much faster performance than previous Intel chips.
Today, Monday, October 28th, Apple announced the new iMac. Like last year, it has a 24-inch display (though there’s also an option for a nano-textured display). And it has the M4 processor that was included in the iPad Pro earlier this year.
Since the iMac is an all-around family desktop computer, upgrading to the M4 provides much faster performance, especially compared to the M1 chip.
But equally interesting are other details. First, there’s color. The blue, green, pink, orange, yellow, silver, and purple hues sound like they’re from last year, but Apple tells us they’re different colors. The front color is pastel, and the back of the iMac has a punch of color. That means, for example, the person at the desk next to you might notice a difference.
Additionally, there are some very useful upgrades. The mouse, keyboard, and trackpad are all wireless, but now connect via USB-C instead of Lightning. Even though almost all gadgets now use one connector, I don’t think charging time and battery life will change.
Apple says the iMac’s entry-level RAM has doubled from 8GB to 16GB and the front-facing camera, called the Center Stage Camera, has been improved. This camera now has a desk view option so you can show others on the call what’s on your desk. It used to be a 1080p camera, but now it has a 12 megapixel resolution.
Additionally, if you choose a model with four ports, all four will be Thunderbolt USB-4 ports instead of two Thunderbolt USB-4 and two USB-3.
All at the same price as before, starting at $1,299.
The new iMac is available for pre-order now and will be available on Friday, November 9th.
