In addition to Messi, Inter Miami teammate Luis Suarez is also among the five finalists for the Landon Donovan MLS MVP award announced on Thursday. Other players include Evander of the Portland Timbers, Cucho Hernandez of the Columbus Crew, and Christian Benteke of DC United, who also won this season’s Golden Boot for most goals.
Inter Miami finished the season in first place in the Eastern Conference with an MLS-record 74 points, 22 wins, 4 losses, and 8 draws, and won the Supporters’ Shield, their best regular season record.
Messi led Miami with 20 goals and 16 assists in 19 games, despite missing many games due to injury and contract with the Argentina national team.
“Yes, he missed some time with us this year with an injury in the Copa America, but being able to come back and make an impact – I think he contributed 30-odd goals – he had a great year. ” Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender said. “There are a lot of other players in the league who had great years. … But the fact that he did what he did this year was pretty amazing.”

Evander had 15 goals and 19 assists for the Timbers, who lost 5-0 to Vancouver in a wild-card match Wednesday night and were eliminated from the playoffs.
Benteke scored 23 goals this season for DC United, but a 3-0 loss to Charlotte in the team’s final regular season game eliminated them from playoff contention.
Hernandez had 19 goals and 14 assists for the defending MLS Cup champion Crew. Columbus opens the postseason in the first round against the Red Bulls.
