Apple will have an “exciting announcement week” starting tomorrow, Apple marketing executive Greg Jozwiak has confirmed. The announcement will focus on the first M4 Mac, but there are also rumors about several other Apple products. Today we aim to clarify what you should not expect this week.
MacBook Air with M4
The MacBook Air is one of Apple’s most popular Macs, but it hasn’t jumped on the M4 bandwagon just yet. Apple refreshed the MacBook Air with the M3 chip in March of this year, and we expected the M4 to follow that schedule again.
So, unfortunately, we won’t see Apple’s thinnest and lightest computer with its most efficient chipset until next March. That is, unless you consider the iPad Pro to be a computer, in which case it has had an M4 for a while.
M4 Ultra Mac
Apple’s high-end computers with Ultra chipsets are still powered by the M2 family of chips, but don’t expect it to transition to M4 just yet. Mac Studio and Mac Pro won’t be updated until late 2025, when the new MacBook Air launches, Mark Gurman said. bloomberg:
Mac Studio is scheduled to receive components between March and June. We expect the Mac Pro, powered by the top-of-the-line M4 product, to be released between June and next fall.
entry level iPad
Many were expecting a refresh of the iPad 11 this year, ideally with support for Apple Intelligence. But there have been delays, and it’s now likely that Apple won’t update its cheapest tablet until next spring.
Display analyst Ross Young and Bloomberg’s Mark Garman both corroborated this, with Young saying the panels would begin shipping this month, hinting at a spring release.
So 2024 was expected to be the year Apple refreshed all iPads, but given the fact that there were zero iPad refreshes in 2023, the cheapest iPad will not have the 2024 update. It seems certain.
summary
In addition to all of the aforementioned products, next spring we’ll also see the iPhone SE 4, iPad Air, AirTag 2, and Apple’s first-ever smart home display. However, everyone expected it to be released in the spring from the beginning.
As a reminder, Apple will be shipping the M4 MacBook Pro, M4 Mac mini, and M4 iMac starting tomorrow. These announcements also accompany the general availability of iOS 18.1 with the first Apple Intelligence features for iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, and iPhone 16 Pro users.
