With the release of iOS 16 in 2022, Apple removed the volume slider from the iPhone lock screen except when using AirPlay. However, Apple has decided to bring back that functionality in iOS 18.2 by adding a new “Always show volume controls” option in the Settings app.
Here’s how to find this new setting:
- Open the Settings app
- Tap “Accessibility”
- Select “Audio and Visual”
- Toggle the “Always show volume controls” option on or off.
Enabling this toggle will always show the volume slider on your lock screen when you’re using headphones and your iPhone’s built-in speakers.
In addition to being an important accessibility addition, this toggle also supports changes first introduced in iOS 16. To this day, people are still complaining about the changes on social media and Reddit. This new toggle in iOS 18.2 should come as a pleasant surprise for them.
iOS 18.2 is currently in developer beta testing and is only available on phones that support Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 models). This update will likely be released to a wide range of beta testers during November, and is expected to be released to everyone in December.
