TL;DR
- Google Calendar is adding a new setting to turn off event illustrations.
- Event illustrations are artistic flair that are displayed next to special events such as birthdays.
- This feature allows users to view more events on the calendar at once.
Google Calendar is rolling out new features that give users more control over the visual aspects of the app. If you’ve ever been fascinated or overwhelmed by Google Calendar’s colorful event illustrations, you’ll be happy (or indifferent?) to hear that there’s now a toggle to turn them off.

While trying out the latest version of Google Calendar (released 2024.42.0-687921584), I discovered this handy new option within the app’s settings. For the uninitiated, event illustrations, also known as “flares,” are automatically generated images that appear next to events in the calendar view. These images are triggered by keywords in the event description, such as “movie” or “coffee,” and provide visual cues for quick identification. Each month also features unique illustrations that reflect seasonal themes and holidays.
In September, we reported that Google Calendar was adding a whole new element to all types of events and was also updating its monthly events. And now it looks like the app is also adding an option to turn them off completely. Therefore, if artistic talents are not to your liking, you are free to cut them out of your life.
You can check what the app looks like with the event illustrations removed. Personally, I find it quite drab and monotonous without these lively little touches. That said, I can see it being appealing to people who need to cram as much information into their calendars as possible. As the illustrations run out, you will notice that more events will appear on the screen. This is helpful if you have a tight schedule.
When turned off, illustrations will no longer be displayed on the event details page after tapping each event. But I wouldn’t blame you if you stuck with these fascinating and eye-catching images instead of staring at endless lines of boring office meetings.
In particular, it appears that turning off event illustrations currently only applies to events and does not affect monthly illustrations. Turning off the moon illustration has been an option on larger devices (tablets or screens with a DPI greater than 600) for quite some time, but the feature hasn’t yet arrived on smartphones.
The new toggle isn’t available to everyone yet, but it’s expected to be reflected in Google Calendar settings soon.
