According to industry sources, Samsung is currently developing a three-screen smartphone. If true, Samsung would become the second manufacturer to bring a tri-fold smartphone to market, furthering the OLED arms race.
According to reports ZDNet (via Android permissions), industry sources say Samsung and its display partners have “completed the development of components for the tri-fold model and are already ready for commercialization.” If this is to be believed, we could see a three-screen version of the foldable smartphone as early as next year.
Huawei recently unveiled its first tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT Ultimate. The unique octagonal camera window and red and gold color scheme were impressive. We don’t yet know how Samsung will approach its design, but it’s safe to say it’ll probably be in line with other foldable devices.
Despite the fact that Samsung has the design and components ready to go into production, the report also states that Samsung may still choose to cancel the project. Foldable smartphones are popular in the Korean and Chinese markets, but sales have been declining this year. Sales have been sluggish, perhaps because the novelty has worn off, or perhaps because the price has been high. We’ll have to wait and see whether Samsung’s mobile division decides to go head-on with Huawei.
It would be great to see some competition in this space. Honestly, do we really need another crease on the screen?
