The beta version of iOS 18.2 has begun, and the widespread release of iOS 18.1 is less than a week away. 18.1 is the first release with Apple Intelligence features for supported phones, but many of the most exciting features are in iOS 18.2.
This release includes Visual Intelligence, Genmoji, Image Playground apps, a new Mail app with AI-classified categories, and integration with ChatGPT. The AI features in iOS 18.1 may seem like “that’s it?” to the average iPhone 16 user. Apple Intelligence features in 18.2 will be a little more sensational. However, while the Siri interface changed in iOS 18.1, the new, smarter Siri is not yet included in this release. This is likely to be introduced in iOS 18.3 or 18.4, scheduled for release around March 2025. Contains a list of Apple Intelligence features coming to iOS 18 and when they are expected to be released.
This first beta is only available to developers for now, but a public beta will be available soon.
Updated October 24th: Several additional new features were discovered in the beta, including new default app settings and EU-specific features.
iOS 18.2: All new features
The first iOS 18.2 beta release is available only on iPhones that can run Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, or iPhone 16).
There is also a new secondary waiting list. The first waiting list of Apple Intelligence features starting with iOS 18.1 will give you access to ChatGPT integration, Visual Intelligence, and the new Writing Tools feature. However, to take advantage of the image generation features, you’ll need to get on a second waiting list: Genmoji, Image Playground, and Image Wand tools.
Here’s what’s available in iOS 18.2 beta so far:
Lighting tools updates: Rather than simply choosing to make your text selection more technical, causal, or concise, you are presented with a free-form field that describes how you want the text to be transformed. For example: Make this into a poem, include lots of dad jokes, or use lots of sarcasm.
Source character: Create new emojis directly on your system keyboard.
Image Playground: Generates a new image based on a text prompt. Apple suggests new costumes, items, and locations, and makes suggestions based on the context of message threads and notes in the Notes app. Identified images in photos allow you to create images based on people you know. Images are not photorealistic and are limited to cartoon or illustrative styles.
Visual intelligence: For iPhone 16 owners with camera control button. Press and hold the camera control to get additional information about a location, translate signs and posters, find phone numbers and addresses, and quickly add them to your contacts. You can also tap a button to ask ChatGPT about what’s on the screen, or tap another button to perform a Google image search.
Image cane: This is a derivative of Image Playground, which uses Apple’s image generation tools to create an image in an open area on a note in the Notes app using the surrounding area and the context of the rest of the note. . Start with a blank area or a rough sketch you’ve created yourself.
ChatGPT integration: If Siri can’t answer your question, you now have the option to ask ChatGPT. Permission must be granted for each request and only limited data will be shared. You don’t have to log in to ChatGPT, but you can if you want or have a premium ChatGPT account that you want to use. You can also ask Siri to generate images with ChatGPT, or use ChatGPT in the writing tool to generate text.
In addition to new user features, there are new developer tools for integrating image generation and burning tools into third-party apps. With this release, Apple Intelligence is localized to English for Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.
Default app: Users around the world will see a new “Default Apps” section at the top setting > appHere you can choose your default email, messaging, calls, call filtering, browser, password apps, and keyboard. Messaging and calling options are new, and all other options are consolidated into one menu.
EU-specific features: In the EU, you can now add web apps in third-party browsers that use their own custom web engines. EU users will also be able to delete the App Store.
