Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite looks like a great chipset for future Android smartphones, and it’s coming soon. And from the looks of it, the Snapdragon 8 Elite will usher in a new wave of UWB-enabled smartphones.
Snapdragon 8 Elite is not only packed with powerful hardware, but also has upgrades across the board. One of those upgrades is connectivity, with Qualcomm adopting the Ultra Wideband (UWB) standard on its flagship chip. Android permissions The FastConnect 7900 connectivity platform points out that it embeds UWB directly into the chip, rather than having it added by the manufacturer.
A Qualcomm representative explained:
FastConnect 7900 is a single-chip 6nm solution. OEMs do not need to add any additional UWB hardware.
UWB is not widely used on Android, mainly because it is not widely available on mobile phones, but it works for short-range tasks such as digital car keys in Google Wallet. It will also work with “Find My Device” trackers…eventually.
The addition of UWB directly to the Snapdragon 8 Elite could indicate broader support in the future, at least through Android devices powered by Qualcomm’s flagship chip. In theory, this could mean the technology will be included in devices that didn’t have it before, such as Samsung’s Galaxy S25 and Flip 7. But what remains to be seen is how Android manufacturers will support this new technology, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite as a whole. We’ve already seen MediaTek’s latest flagship, the Dimensity 9400, widely used in place of Qualcomm’s chips.
At least we’re glad this happened, and we hope this will lead to UWB being used more often.
