Today, we reported that some iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max users are reporting their devices randomly freezing and restarting.
This issue seems to occur randomly even on devices in standby mode. The iPhone becomes slow to respond to touch inputs and eventually restarts quickly. Some users have reported that their iPhone restarts unexpectedly when in standby mode.
Most users report that this problem occurs sporadically, while others report that the problem crashes 10 to 20 times a day.
Apple has confirmed that the iOS 18.1 update fixes the restart issue. This fix is documented in the iOS 18.1 release notes included in the release candidate released earlier today.
Fixes an issue that could cause iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro models to restart unexpectedly
iOS 18.1 also fixes several other bugs, including:
- Fixed an issue with podcasts where unplayed episodes were marked as played
- Fixes an issue where videos recorded at 4K 60 when the device is warm may experience stuttering while scrubbing video playback in Photos.
- Fixed an issue where a digital car key might not unlock with passive entry or start the vehicle after restoring from a backup or transferring directly from another iPhone
The iOS 18.1 update is expected to be generally available by the end of October.
