Google Pixel smartphones will have a new feature that will allow users to limit battery charging to 80%, but the feature was missing from this week’s first Android 15 update.
Smartphone batteries are technically most efficient when they are not charging to their maximum potential. Typically, 80% is the point where charging slows down and saving that charge has the biggest impact on battery health. Therefore, many smartphones offer the ability to limit charging at that point.
Google is also adding this feature to Pixel phones, but it’s not available yet.
Google finally started rolling out Android 15 to Pixel phones this week, but there’s confusion as to why this battery charging limit isn’t available. This is due to long-term expectations, as well as some coverage of new features in Android 15 mentioning them as if they were included in this week’s Android 15 release.
However, in the initial Android 15 release, Pixel devices were not subject to battery charging limits.
The feature was first spotted in July as a code string within the last Android 15 beta update. This was not a fully functional feature, just a foundation for future features. This feature was actually first rolled out in Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2 in September.
When a feature is released in beta, it typically becomes associated with that version. Code is rarely, if ever, a good indicator. when Features will be available.
So when will battery charging limits be applied to Pixel smartphones? The feature is tied to the first quarterly release, QPR1, so it’s currently scheduled to be released in December of this year However, there is a (very small) chance that it will end up being delayed.
