While our review of the iPad mini (2021) didn’t find any major issues with the sixth-generation version of the tablet’s display, this slate did receive complaints about a “jelly scroll” issue, which Apple has now addressed. It seems that it has been fixed. On iPad mini 7.
For those unfamiliar with this series, jelly scrolling is when one side of the screen updates more slowly than the other, causing an unpleasant effect, especially when scrolling up or down on pages of text. It’s a thing. Apple says this is not a problem, but it continues to be a nuisance for some people.
We are still reviewing the 7th generation iPad mini (2024), which will be released on October 23rd. Meanwhile, noted Apple commentator Jason Snell said this on his Six Colors podcast (via MacRumors): We currently believe the issue is resolved.
Snell didn’t go into specific details about the tweak or say where he got the information, but given his close relationship with Apple, it seems unlikely that the new iPad mini will have an 8.3-inch LCD panel. Even if it is installed, this is reliable information. The screen is almost the same as the previous model.
How big of an issue this is depends on how much the iPad mini 6’s jelly-like scrolling ruins your viewing experience. Apple was adamant that there was no problem, and it was only noticeable in portrait mode, but once it was visible, it was difficult to turn it off while using the tablet.
Indeed, it was enough of an issue to mention in our list of 5 Potentially Annoying Limitations of the iPad mini 7. There aren’t many upgrades to the new slate apart from the performance improvements, but it does allow you to run Apple Intelligence.
Rumors surfaced last year that changes to the way the iPad mini is assembled are responsible for eradicating jelly-like scrolling. Whatever happens behind the scenes, it will be a welcome improvement.
You can pre-order the iPad mini 7 from Apple now or wait until Wednesday to pick it up in-store. Prices start from $499 / £499 / AU$799, with 128GB of storage available, and 256GB and 512GB models also available.
