When it comes to Android phones in 2024, Samsung often takes the lead in conversation and certainly sales, but the South Korean tech giant has been lagging behind in preparing the latest versions of Android for its customers. There is. Google has finally pushed Android 15 to Pixel smartphone owners, and now another Samsung rival has confirmed that it will be launching its latest operating system in the coming days.
OnePlus announced in an online event on Thursday, October 24th that it will be unveiling a new Android 15 mobile software version, OxygenOS 15.
The Chinese company has been tight-lipped about the exact new features of the free update, but we already have a pretty good idea. That’s because Android 15 is created by Google as an open-source operating system. That means it’s free to use for all Android smartphone manufacturers, and most choose to add unique designs, animations, and general aesthetics to their versions to differentiate themselves.
Android 15 doesn’t bring many visual changes to Google Pixel smartphones, nor does it introduce many headline-grabbing new features. This is mainly because Android is a very mature operating system and Google is no longer able to produce major changes that are beneficial to smartphone owners year after year.
Instead, Android 15 offers several anti-theft updates, including AI that can tell if a thief has stolen your phone from your hands. This will lock your phone and prevent you from accessing your personal data such as banking apps.
Additionally, new authentication requests occur when someone turns off Find My Device or resets their phone. This is what thieves do when they try to sell your phone after stealing it. Of course, this won’t stop phone theft, but the hope is that once criminals know that Android phones are harder to reset, it will reduce the number of phone thefts.
“One of the first operating systems based on the Android 15 update, OxygenOS 15 leverages OnePlus’ extensive research and deep user insights to create a new generation of software that embodies the iconic Never Settle spirit. ” says OnePlus. “With an industry-leading fast and smooth experience, meaningful new AI features, and a distinctive design style that sets OnePlus apart, OxygenOS 15 will be the fastest and most user-friendly OxygenOS ever. ”
OnePlus has been significantly slower than its competitors in adopting AI software features, but OxygenOS 15 looks to change that.
It’s not yet confirmed which OnePlus smartphones will come with Android 15, but there’s no doubt that the latest flagship OnePlus 12 will be the first to get the new features. OnePlus also has the OnePlus 12R, OnePlus Open foldable, and OnePlus Nord 4, which could launch with OxygenOS 15 soon.
This news may trouble Samsung Galaxy owners who have been among the first to buy the latest versions of Android in recent years. However, the company has confirmed that it won’t release One UI 7, a flavor of Android 15, until January 2025. Perhaps it’s time for the next generation of Galaxy S25 phones to be announced.
