As a technology writer, artist, musician, and photographer, I’ve been using drawing tablets, image processing software, and video and audio editing programs for years.
When faced with the challenge of identifying the best drawing tablet for a vast and complex field, I used my multimedia skills to develop a testing methodology using the software listed below.
- Adobe Photoshop for retouching
- BorisFX plugin to add effects
- Create still lifes and drawings with Corel Painter
- Create video clips with titles, filters, transition effects, and audio clips using Adobe Premiere Rush
- Reason 12 Audio Program
- “Notability” is a memo app that can convert handwritten notes to text.
- Create short animated videos with Adobe After Effects (display tablets only)
Wacom One 12 Display Tablet
Just buy this (best all around)
I created the animation above by using a Wacom One 12 drawing display tablet to draw a self-portrait in Adobe After Effects, an animation and motion graphics app from Adobe’s Creative Cloud Suite.
To create my self-portrait, I used the brush tool, which allows me to create a variety of animated brush strokes. Next, I applied various effects to the animation.
Wacom Intuos Medium Graphics Tablet
best drawing tablet with bluetooth
I created the video clip above in the video editing app Adobe Premiere Rush using Wacom’s Intuos M Bluetooth drawing tablet. Added two video clips, a title, an effect, an audio clip (first and last video clip), and a transition. I then timed those transitions using my tablet.
Huion Kamvas 22 Series Drawing Tablet
Large screen (Splage)
I created the animation above by drawing a self-portrait in Adobe After Effects, an animation and motion graphics app, using a Huion 22 Plus drawing display tablet.
To create my self-portrait, I used the brush tool, which allows me to create a variety of animated brush strokes. Next, I applied some effects to the animation.
Huon Inspiroy 2M
Easiest on a budget
video test
I created the video clip above by adding two video clips, titles, effects, and transitions in Adobe Premiere Rush using Huion’s Inspiroy 2 drawing tablet. I then timed those transitions using my tablet.
audio test
For this test, I wanted to see if I could use a drawing tablet to edit audio files in a digital audio workstation (DAW) like Reason 12. Added random notes to the first clip (00:08 to 00:28). Connect to your Europa synthesizer (one of several virtual instruments within your DAW).
Next, I added a virtual effect to the synthesizer, the Sync Time Effect Modulator. This allows you to add dynamic movement and change to your sounds over time, making notes wobble or drastically changing pitch.
Finally, we added automation to the effect’s four controls (circled in blue). Amount, Character, Frequency, and Resonance (a green square appears around each control to indicate that automation is applied).
When the automation is applied, the four controls automatically adjust to the values indicated by the four graphs drawn within the yellow bars (circled in red).
You can hear the results of the automation in the second audio clip of the video (00:30 to 00:51).
