The home in question is from Sheryl Industries, a Long Island, New York, brand that sells hangar shelters and shipping containers. The company is selling the same 19-by-20-foot expandable home for $36,000 on its website. The Apple Cabin’s MSRP is $24,000 at the original supplier and $17,400 at Walmart. The smallest version of the iPhone-like dwelling is just over the size of a shed and sells for $11,800. The ultra-compact version of Apple Cabin has enough space for a bed and toilet. No shower to speak of.
Walmart says it will deliver by flatbed truck, but prospective buyers will need a forklift to unload the items. Cheryl Industrials also recommends renting a crane for this job. The larger non-Apple home weighs 7,849 pounds and is over 19 feet long. The largest 20-foot Apple Cabin weighs 4,563 pounds. At least Walmart notes that shipping is free and pod houses don’t require building walls.
Both homes are made in China, according to Sheryl Industries. To build a 19-by-20-foot house, you’ll need to unroll several walls and use drywall anchors and screws to secure everything in place. Before you ask, no, you shouldn’t screw screws into the wall to display family portraits. At least a toilet is provided, but the plumbing situation is up to you. Walmart also recommends placing it on a concrete base.
The product has been available at Walmart since August. People magazine first spotted them at their current price. Amazon also sells a large number of prefabricated homes, and has done so for many years. Still, it’s a relief that nothing the online retail giant sells resembles an iPhone.
