CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Gas made popular after a video of hundreds of children smoking it went viral has arrived at smoke shops across the tri-state.
“Galaxy Gas” is a generic term for flavored nitrous oxide.
“The name itself suggests that it transports you away from this planet and into another dimension,” says Aaron Lane, who works at Dekochi Recovery Center.
Galaxy Gas’s website begins with a warning that its products are only used to flavor desserts, whipped cream, and other products.
Lane says it’s no secret that whipped cream, which is inhaled upright, can make you feel high.
“If you know it’s going to be used in violation of the law, you can’t distribute it or distribute it,” said Mark Crumbein, legal analyst for FOX19 NOW.
Lanier says her daughters saw Galaxy Gas.
“They thought it was a joke until they started going to parties and seeing this. They see their friends getting into accidents or falling asleep at the wheel, but this… It’s serious,” he said.
The side of the gas cylinder said “For food use only,” but when FOX19 entered the Tri-State smokehouse, they found the entire stand filled with gas.
When we asked the cashier what it was, he said it was essentially just a whippet.
“You call it a whippet. Usually called that when you use a whippet to get high. It’s a scary word, but no one knows what that worker really understands.” I don’t know,” Crumbein said.
Lane said he doesn’t know how gasoline is used for anything other than getting high.
“This is not something that would be used in a culinary setting. You won’t see Galaxy Gas sitting on a table in a restaurant or at a dessert counter,” he said.
Crumbein says it’s difficult to prove that gasoline is being sold for reasons other than what it says on the label.
This product is legal when used as a food additive, but illegal when knowingly sold for inhalation.
“Vape shop owners may say they can’t check whether everyone who comes here is using it legally or illegally. , that’s all we care about,” Crumbein said.
A report published by the National Institutes of Health states that long-term use of nitrous oxide can cause neurological problems and severe vitamin B12 deficiency.
Mr Lane says it’s important to make sure children are aware of the problems Galaxy gas can cause.
“Talk to your kids and let them know you’re there and give them an honest dialogue so they know you’re on their side. That’s what I do. So I recommend that,” he said.
Krumbein said one of the things that is illegal is driving under the influence of nitrous oxide.
He said other enforcement efforts regarding Galaxy Gas could be difficult unless officers see someone abusing it.
Any changes to prevent it from being sold and marketed as it currently is would need to come from the General Assembly.
