Technology has advanced so fast over the past 20 years that it’s really hard to keep up. Do you have an old-school device you don’t want to part with?
You can answer that in a moment, but first let me explain how I came up with this.
My family provided me with some VHS tapes. I received the following email:
Does anyone like the Simpsons?
I have 12 VHS tapes of Simpsons episodes. Probably around 150. From the 1990s.
Please let us know if you are interested.
I have the nerve to say, not only do old-school Simpson fans have the option of streaming or watching DVDs, but who has a VHS player to watch these grainy episodes? There wasn’t.
That got me thinking… What vintage technology are New Jerseyans keeping despite being obsolete?
video deck
As I said, we’ve gone from VHS tapes to DVDs to Blu-rays, and now have most content readily available on an annoying number of streaming services.
turntable
Sure, they’ve made a comeback in the last decade or so as Millennials and Gen Z have come to own physical media, but some of us still have records from the ’70s. .
Bonus points if you can pinpoint the second specific song that was skipped on the record and it sounds weird when you listen to it on other media.
DVD player
The two big drawbacks for me when it comes to streaming movies and TV are 1) it’s a pain when the internet goes down, and 2) there are no DVD extras. I miss the commentary on TV shows (end of the nerd rants)!
foldable cell phone
Do I miss slamming my flip phone shut at the end of a conversation? Or is that a look inside me as a person?
If you still have the luxury of closing your phone and throwing it across the room at the end of a frustrating conversation, I envy you. If you’re still typing in T9Word, I’m not.
cd player
Just like with a record, it’s frustrating when you play your favorite song too much and it skips a little bit, and it feels good to hold a new CD in your hand instead of just clicking “download.”
landline phone
Have you ever had a crush on someone if you didn’t wrap the cord around your finger when you talked to them?
And even though we went cordless a long time ago, does anyone still have a cordless phone now that most people have a cell phone?
Now that you know who still has certain objects, see if you remember any of these…
Appearance: Something you’d see in a great 80’s garage.
From scandalous bikini calendars to dad’s AMC Gremlins, the ’80s garage was a treasure trove of adventure, fun, and sometimes downright danger.

Take a look: These are the things you’d see in a 70’s kitchen
Take a nostalgic trip down memory lane to the quintessential ’70s kitchen, from mushroom decorations to that iconic water jug (you know it).
