Google Meet for Android will soon get an AI-generated background

Important points

  • Google Meet rolled out AI-generated background images on the web last year and is currently developing them for its Android app.
  • This feature was discovered as part of the APK teardown of the latest Gmail app and is still in its early stages.
  • If available on Android, this feature in Meet should be available to users with the Gemini for Google Workspace add-on or Google One AI Premium subscription.

Google has slowly but surely incorporated AI elements into nearly every product it offers, including the Workspace app. Google Meet is no exception, with the video conferencing app releasing AI-generated background images as a Workspace Labs project last year. Google launched this feature over a year ago, but it’s still only available in the web version of Meet, so its reach is somewhat limited. Fortunately, this situation is likely to change soon, with new evidence indicating that Google is working on bringing AI-generated backgrounds to the Android version of its video calling app.

Android Authority officials looked into version 2024.10.06.682972205 of the Gmail app and discovered a new option within Meet called “Generate Background.” effect menu. Assuming it works similarly to the web version, users should be able to generate an AI background image with a custom prompt directly from their self-view screen, the page they see right before joining a Google Meet call.

It may take a while before it’s ready

Android Authority can bring up a new option, but tapping it reportedly returns an empty page, suggesting that the story behind AI generation in Meet for Android is still in its infancy. I am. It’s unclear whether Google will roll out this Gemini-powered feature to the iOS/iPadOS version of Meet, but I’d be surprised if it didn’t.

If available, eligible users generate background [効果]Click the button in the menu and enter the custom prompt to get the desired background image. You also have the option to choose a style, which includes options such as photography, sci-fi, and fantasy, as detailed in this support page entry from Google.

Its functionality should remain largely unchanged when released to Android, but it’s hard to say definitively since it’s not fully functional at the moment. This background image generation feature should be available to users who have the Gemini for Google Workspace add-on or a Google One AI premium subscription.

This isn’t the only AI-related feature built into this video conferencing app. Meet added a note-taking feature a while back, and we now know that this feature will be coming to Android in the near future. Some of Meet’s AI additions were previously detailed by Google in April.
