Here’s why I’ve been using this little charger for so long

Have you ever seen someone walking around with a loop of cable hanging from their pocket to their phone? I’ve been there and hooked that loop to the corners of too many chairs and tables. Never again. The Anker 622 MagGo’s magnetic ring matches the MagSafe magnet on all iPhones starting with iPhone 12, holds securely, and charges without wires.

It’s also compact. It’s a small backpack that powers your phone when you carry it or hide it in your pocket. If it doesn’t fit too well, it will fit in your jeans pocket.

These features alone are enough to convince me, but the Anker 622 also includes a foldable back flap that can prop up your iPhone and hold your phone in a wide orientation while in standby mode. If you use a power adapter such as anchor nano pro (sold separately) and a charging cable, I’ve spent long classes tilting my phone so I can keep track of the time without checking the clock.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Size: 4.13″ x 2.61″ x 0.5″
  • Weight: 5oz

MagSafe compatible charging

I own several chargers, each with some kind of compromise. It’s bulky. Requires cable. It can charge wirelessly, but it doesn’t contain magnets to hold the phone in place, so it’s difficult to stay connected. There’s always something.

The Anker 622 is 0.5 inches thick and snaps onto the back of your iPhone using MagSafe-compatible magnets. No need to turn it on to start charging. Power flows immediately when connected.

Now, this isn’t the highest capacity (5,000 mAh) or fastest portable charger. That’s fine. What I usually need is a way to get a few more hours of battery life on my iPhone. You can usually get a full top-off of the iPhone 15 Pro.

establish a position

Another attractive feature of the Anker 622 MagGo for me is the built-in stand. To be honest, it doesn’t seem to work very well. This is a set of cloth-covered plastic pieces that lie flat against the case, fold in two places, and when stretched out attach to the back of the unit with a magnetic strip. Still, I had no issues with the stability of my iPhone 15 Pro or the size of the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The Anker 622 MagGo’s stand slides down and attaches with a magnetic strip.

This also allows you to use standby mode by turning your iPhone on its side when you place it on a table or desk (the magnets are strong enough to hold your phone in place) ).

Smart port placement is important

The charger draws power from the single USB-C port on the edge of the case instead of the bottom. This means you can charge it while the stand is open. Many charger ports are stuck to the bottom.

The USB-C port is on the side, so it’s accessible even in stand configuration.

This USB-C port can also act as a charger for other devices when you connect a cable, such as when you need to charge your Apple Watch.

Comparison of Anker 622 MagGo with similar mobile batteries

Before purchasing the Anker 622 MagGo, I was carrying an Anker PowerCore III 10K Wireless. This doubles the battery capacity, includes a USB-A port, and can be charged wirelessly, but there are no magnets to hold the phone in place. This means that if you don’t use a cable, your phone and charger must be stable and level. I would often find my iPhone slipping off its wireless perch and not charging. It’s also big and heavy. I still use it, but it’s just a power bank I keep in my carry-on suitcase as a backup charger.

The Anker 622 MagGo is much smaller and lighter than my trusty Anker PowerCore III 10K Wireless, which is now my solid backup.

Jeff Carlson/CNET

Since I’ve owned this Anker 622 MagGo, the company has released several updated models. of anchor 633 It packs 10,000mAh into a slightly thicker brick, includes a USB-A port in addition to USB-C, and comes with a metal kickstand to keep the phone upright. It’s currently on sale for $40, or 50% off, on Prime Day.

You can get a chunkier one for $62 on Prime Day Anker MagGo Power Bank It delivers 10,000 mAh and follows the same idea of compact magnetic charging and a convenient kickstand. Its main attraction is faster 15-watt magnetic charging and Qi2 compatibility, as well as a small display on the side that shows battery capacity and an estimate of battery life left in hours.
