Xiaomi has reportedly filed a patent for an innovative clamshell-style foldable smartphone that can be separated into two different segments. The patent was discovered by 91mobiles in the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) database and includes images that hint at a sleek design reminiscent of the Xiaomi Mix Flip unveiled last month. In its standard unseparated form, the smartphone has a portrait display and folds in half like other flip-style foldable devices.
According to images in the patent application, the device’s design allows it to function as a single unit when assembled, but can also be separated into two separate parts. In the closed state, the smartphone exhibits a tall form factor and, noticeably, does not include an external hinge mechanism. Instead, grooves with pogo pins on both segments appear to be used, presumably for reconnection. This mechanism may include side hinges or magnetic attachments, but the exact nature of the connection remains unconfirmed.
Interestingly, one of the drawings suggests that the device can rotate around a vertical axis, but its intended purpose remains unclear. Xiaomi has a history of experimenting with unique designs, so this possible feature is in line with the company’s reputation for innovation.
The discovery of this patent further raises expectations for Xiaomi’s upcoming releases, with the Xiaomi 15 Pro also expected to be launched by the end of the year. However, like any patent, there is no guarantee that Xiaomi will bring this design to market soon or at all. Many companies patent experimental designs that never materialize into consumer products. Still, this development shows that Xiaomi is continuously exploring creative smartphone designs.
Xiaomi has not made any official statement regarding this patent, nor has it provided any details about the possible release of this device. For now, the design offers an interesting glimpse into what could be the next step in Xiaomi’s foldable technology.
