FAQ
Hello, I’m Joe Osborne. I’m PCMag’s deputy editor specializing in computing hardware. I have over 10 years of experience in computer testing and evaluation. So here are my answers to three frequently asked questions about buying a new laptop, especially during sales events like Prime Big Deal Days.
How much should I pay for a laptop?
Laptop prices vary depending on features and performance. A basic full-featured model can cost as little as $400, while giant gaming models and workstations can cost over $3,000. Your price range determines what you get and what you sacrifice, so the most important factor to keep in mind is what you need most. For example, a budget laptop will have less storage space and less RAM than a high-end laptop. Good for casual use without multitasking or running CPU-intensive programs.

How long should my laptop last?
When it comes to long-term power sustainability, computers can last for several years if you take good care of them. This means having malware protection when you browse the web, dedicated surge protectors to protect your hardware from electrical damage, battery health management, and more. Our how-to articles provide tips to extend the life of your laptop.
As for battery life, it usually depends on usage. A laptop with a 4K display that runs demanding games that test the limits of the GPU will naturally wear out faster than a laptop that you simply use to surf the web. Test battery life by playing a locally stored video file nonstop with no wireless connection active and screen brightness at 50%. This may not match your usage profile, but is the best comparison measure to determine which system will give you better battery life overall. Keep in mind that more processor-intensive tasks will drain your battery life.
What are the best budget laptops?
PCMag’s current top-rated budget laptop is the Acer Aspire 3. It’s simple, efficient, has a Ryzen 3 processor, 128GB SSD, 15.6-inch 1080p display, and is competitively priced. It will still be one of the best deals on laptops when it hits stores in early 2023.
