An interesting discovery shows that Samsung’s 2024 foldable devices are uncharacteristically stuck in the software past.
Samsung seems to have forgotten about the Galaxy Z Flip 6, Fold 6, and monthly Google Play system updates. As highlighted by SamMobile, these devices have not received updated versions of Google’s Play System software since their release. The foldable smartphone appears to be stuck in Play Systems’ April 2024 version, but this isn’t some weird user error.
The publication points out that Samsung’s monthly security updates and Google’s Play Systems patches are separate. Users can attempt to manually update the software by proceeding to the next step. [設定]>[端末情報]>[ソフトウェア情報]>[Google Play システムのアップデート]. But there’s nothing there. For unknown reasons, Samsung is not pushing forward with such a patch for the Flip 6 or Fold 6.
Play System updates ensure that the “core elements” of Android run properly. This also affects Play Store performance.
Further investigation reveals that Samsung’s 2024 foldable device is the only device left out of the loop. The company’s past generation devices and the Galaxy S24 have Continuously updated with the latest Play System software
Android Police officials echoed this sentiment, theorizing that AI features and software could be the culprit. Further “optimizations” may be needed as Samsung refines things in parallel with Galaxy AI. Perhaps, but it’s alarming that the company isn’t pushing ahead and is leaving a 2024 foldable device with six-month-old software.
Interestingly, Samsung has left some devices with legacy software even in late 2023. Last December, it was reported that the Galaxy S23 series, Fold 5, and Galaxy A33 were all running the July 2023 version of Google Play Systems. Oddly enough, users trying to update manually were seeing a message saying “Your device is up to date” when it wasn’t actually updating. In another instance, I got a message that said “Updates are temporarily unavailable.”
It was suggested that such problems would be resolved automatically. We know Samsung is struggling with One UI 6.1.1 (pre-rollout). and One UI 7 (Android 15). Therefore, the issues with Flip 6 and Fold 6 will be resolved in time. we just have to wait.
An update to Google’s Play system could bring important security and privacy fixes. An update released in June improved these aspects of Android, including support for new “digital wallets and payments” processes. The update also allows users to pair a USB-C cable with Wi-Fi to speed up data transfer between devices.
Play Protect played a role in helping Google upgrade its features to better protect users from malicious application threats.
